Thomas Rock, previously known as Gobbler’s Knob, may not have the 360-degree views that the neighboring Sugarloaf Mountain has, but it still offers something spectacular.

We discovered this scenic site back in 2013 and it has yet to lose its charm. Visitors follow a paved, interpretive trail to the top where they are greeted with views of Lake Independence, Lake Superior, Salmon Trout Point, and the small village of Big Bay.

There are picnic tables, trash cans, and vault toilets available in the parking area and additional picnic tables at the top, making this a perfect location for lunch.

The wildlife is abundant. We have seen everything from chipmunks to a variety of bird species and deer.

To get there from Marquette, take CR 550 23 miles to CR 510. Turn left (It doesn’t go right) and continue for about 1 mile. The entrance is on the right with a large stone sign that says “Thomas Rock Scenic Site.”
